Havrix is administered in a two dose series at 0, and 6-12 months.  Although it can provide adequate protection after one single dose administered prior to travel, it is strongly recommended to receive the second dose to achieve long term protection.

Twinrix is combination hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccine that is administered in a three dose series at 0, 1 and 6 months.  Travellers departing within 3-4 weeks may choose the accelerated dosing schedule (0, 7, 21-30 days) to receive optimal protection.  In this case, a booster dose at 12 months is needed to achieve long-term protection.

Hepatitis A is a viral liver disease usually acquired through ingestion of contaminated food or water.  It occurs throughout the world and is most common in developing countries, especially in Central and South America, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Western Pacific.  International travellers are at increased risk, particularly for those who travel to high-risk countries, visit rural areas, or trek in backcountry areas.  It is preventable by receiving hepatitis A vaccine before travel.
